I want to start preparing for Preliminary exams from ri8 now , I don't know the exact pattern for Prelims .Can anyone suggest me.To my knowledge i know that the prelims consists of Paper 1 and Paper 2 General Studies and General Aptitude Test respectively ,I don't know what exactly the paper 1 and paper 2 consists of !! Re: Optional subjects in the IAS preliminary exam Look every who want to choose optional subject for your civil service exam, should be clear of one thing that you should have to have a good command over that particular subject, atleast you should know the basics of that subject because a new start would be a bit trouble some because its new to you, so atleast choose that subject that you atleast understand or know the basics of that subject. The syllabus of mains should be finished before prelims so that one may get enough time for revision and updating current affairs before mains. I had to learn the hard way the importance of effective writing, which is absolutely essential for success in this exam or for that matter success in life. Standard textbooks of both foreign and Indian authors can be referred to. In these papers, full details should be given in your answer with diagrams, graphs etc. In the third attempt I laid equal emphasis on GS and optionals and lady luck smiled and I was selected in the IAS. There is no need to choose any optional subject for prelims as the UPSC board changed the syllabus and pattern of prelims examination.In the place of optionals UPSC introduced CSAT exam which is aptitude test. There is no optional subjects for preliminary examination.The optional subject in only main examination. UPSC Main Examination - Optional Subjects :-
Qualification :- The candidate should have a graduate degree from any recognized university or equivalent qualification and the candidate age should between 21 years to 30 years of age as on August 1st of the year of examination |

Candidates should choose the subjects as per his interest. Any two subjects (each having 2 papers) to be selected from the prescribed optional subjects. Each paper is of 3 hours duration. The following combinations are not allowed: Political Science & International Relations and Public Administration Commerce and Management Anthropology and Sociology Maths and Statistics Agriculture and Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science Management and Public Administration Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science and Medical Science Any two branches of engineering.
