Complete Details About IAS/IPS Exam

the selections for both IAS as well as IPS is done through the Civil Services Exam which is conducted every year by the UPSC..

Candidates are eligible for appearing for the Civil Service Exam only if they fulfill the following conditions :-

>> Candidate must be within the age limit of 21-30 years if general, 21-33 years for OBC,21-35 years for SC/ST and 21-40 years for PWD candidates..

>> Candidate must have completed graduation from a recognized University in any stream..

>> The maximum number of attempts allowed for general candidates is 4, for OBC its 7 and for SC/ST/PWD there's no limit..

There is no specific subject you have to study for Civil Services..you can complete your graduation in any stream you may like..

You will be facing 2 rounds in the written exam :-

>> Prelims 2 papers which are conducted to test your aptitude and GK skills..

>> Mains 9 subjective papers in which you have to select your optional subjects based on your graduation and English is compulsory..

After clearing the Mains you will be facing the Interview round..

If you are appearing for the IPS then you will have to clear the MEdical Examination round also..

You may also visit http://upsc.gov.in for more details about this examination..

I have attached the pattern of the Mains and the list of optional subjects which you can choose for the Mains..

Also go through the Prelims or CSAT syllabus..

all the best..

With Warm Regards
Nitz

Re: Which subjects are required for IPS/IAS exam? How many papers are there?

Dear pal,
It is not like you should choose a particular degree for applying for the civil service exam. You can apply for it provided you have completed the degree course or if you are in final year. The degree course can be either three or four year course.
The aptitude exam is common for all those who are applying for the exam. On clearing it the aspirant will be eligible for the main exam in which you need to appear in 9 optional subject. The various optional subject are civil engineering, geology, botany, zoology, physics, history, geography, animal husbandry, political science, commerce, economics etc.
the aspirant can choose any nine papers from the list and appear in it. The aspirant need to secure minimum marks in order to clear the exam. The aspirant clearing the main exam will be called for the final stage of selection namely personnel interview.
