Respected Sir/Madam,

My date of birth is 19 Dec 1981. I come under open category from my birth but after marriage as per my husbands caste I come under SC category. will I be able to appear as an SC candidate and get age relaxation as now i belong to SC caste. please reply as i am really keen to appear for UPSC examination. I am a graduate.

A candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on 1st August, in the year of examination.

What does this statement actually mean? I am born on 21st april 1984. But since the forms are available in the month of Feb I will be under 30 while filling the form but the exams are held in May and i will be 31 when attending the prelims. so can i attend or i cant? Please advise.

UPSC conducts many exams each year.
All these exams have different educational qualifications and age criteria.


Exams conducted for candidates who have just passed class 12th are:
>> NDA exams- Maximum age to apply is 19 years.
NDA exams are conducted for defence services

>> SCRA exams- Maximum age to apply is 21 years
SCRA exams are conducted for indian Railways

Exams that are conducted for Engineering Graduates:
>> Engineering services exams
Maximum age to apply is 30 years

Exams conducted for Civil services:
Educational Qualifications :Graduation pass in any Stream

AGE- Minimum 21 years
Maximum 30 years
Candidates belonging to OBC gets 3 years and SC/ST gets 5 years age relaxations

UPSC stands for the Union Public service commission.It is the examination conducting body of India which conducts large no of examination every year.

Friend,your query is in complete as you have not mentioned the name of the UPSC exam for which you want the eligibility criteria .

Some of the examinations are based on 10+2 qualification while most of the UPSC exams are based on bachelor's degree.

10+2 based examinations:

1.NDA/NA exam:

>>Age limit is 16.5-19 years

2.SCRA exam:

>>Age limit is 17-21 years.

Bachelor's degree based examinations are:

1.Civil services examinations:

Age limit: 21-30 years with upper age limit relaxed for reserved catgeory.

2.Indian engineering services examinations

3.Indian forest services examinations

Note: The age limit for both these exams are same as civil services.

4.Central police force examinations:

>>Age limit:20-25 years with relaxations applicable.

5.Combined defence services:

>>Age limit is :19-25 years

6.Combined medical services

>>Maximum age limit is 32 years.


For all these examinations ,you must be an Indian citizen.

UPSC - Union Public Service Commission conducts examination for various Central Government Organisations such as NDA/CDS/SCRA/IES/Civil Service Exam etc.

Eligibility Criteria :-

NDA - National Defence Academy to join Indian Army, Navy and Air Force wing-The candidate must be an unmarried Indian male having either appear for the final 12th exam or pass in any stream from a recognised Board within the age of 16.5 to 19 years with good Physical Fitness.

CDS - Combined Defence Service - to join Defence forces-The candidate must be an Indian National having either appear for the final Graduation Degree exam or pass in any stream from a recognised University within the age of 19 to 25 years with good Physical Fitness.

SCRA - Special Class Railway Apprentice to join Mechanical Dept. of Indian Railways-The candidate must be an Indian national having completed Graduation with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with 60% marks from a recognised University within the age of 20 to 28 years.

Civil Service Exam to join as IAS/IPS/IRS/IFS etc. officer-The candidate must be an Indian national having either appear for the final Graduation degree exam or pass in any stream from a recognised University within the age of 21 to 30 years wit upper age relaxation fro reserved candidate.

Eligibility criteria to apply for UPSC are

you need to pass your graduation in any dicipline.your age shall be from 21-30 years...you can also apply for UPSC in final year but you need to present your graduation degree at time of interview

Educational Qualifications

The Candidates must hold a degree of any of Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or state Legislature in India or other educational Institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University Under Section-3 of the University Grants commission Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification


Age Limit :

A candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on 1st August, 2012, ie.e he/she must have been born not earlier than 2nd August, 1982 and not later than 1st August, 1991

The upper age limit prescribed above will be relaxable



Nationality

For the Indian Administrative Service and the Indian Police Service, a candidate must be a citizen of India.

Number of attempts :

Every candidate appearing at the examination who is otherwise eligible, shall be permitted four attempts at the examination.

Provided that this restriction on the number of attempts will ot apply in the case of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes candidates who are otherwise eligible.

Provied further that the number of attempts permissible to candidates belonging to other backward Classes, who are otherwise eligible shall be seven. the relaxation will be available to the candidates who are eligible to avail of reservation applicable to such candidates..

Physical Standards :

Candidates must be physically fit according to physical standards for admission to Civil Service Examination, 2012 as per guidelines given in Appendix-III of Rules for Examination published in the Gazette of India Extraordinary dated 4th February, 2012.

ELIGIBILITY

Nationality

A candidate must be either:
(a) A citizen of India, or
(b) a subject of Nepal, or
(c) a subject of Bhutan, or
(d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India.
(e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Srilanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.

Age Limits

A candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on 1st August, in the year of examination.

The upper age limit prescribed above will be relaxable in the follwing cases:

Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe: upto a maximum of five years.
Other Backward Classes: upto a maximum of three years.
State of Jammu & Kashmir (Domiciled during the period from the 1st January, 1980 to 31st December, 1989): upto a maximum of five years.
