You need to sit in and clear civil services examination conducted by UPSC...you atleast need a graduation degree with high second division to sit in this examination... first of all complete your graduation and have a great command over your subject.....you can start preparing for general knowledge and general studies by throughly reading NCERT books and magazines like Competition success, frontline and newspapers like hindu.... general studies is the head ache of most IPS aspirants , so start preparing for it as soon you decide to seriously think IPS as a career option. |

Re: Is the syllabus for IAS and IPS the same? Yes, the syllabus for both IPS & IAS exam is the same. Actually recruitment of both IAS & IPS officers are done through a common exam called civil services exam conducted by UPSC. The first phase of civil services exam is called CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test). The examination structure of CSAT comprises of one paper consisting of questions from general studies and the other paper focusing on the aptitude skills of the students. Indian Civil services Examination are conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) for the following posts: - (i) Indian Administrative Service (IAS) (ii) Indian Foreign Service (IFS) (iii) Indian Police Service (IPS) (iv) Indian Engineering Service (IES) (v) Indian Audit and Accounts Service (vi) Indian Customs and Central Excise Services. (vii) Indian Revenue Service (IRS) (viii) Indian Ordnance Factories Service (ix) Indian Postal Service (IPS) (x) Indian Trade Services (ITS) ....... etc. And For all the above exams syllabus is same..... IAS and IPS officers are given state cadres after the selection.The cadre controlling authority of IAS is ministry of personal and public grievances,government of india.The IPS cadre is controlled by ministry of home affairs,government of india. best of luck |

IAS = Indian Administrative Service IPS = Indian Police Service IFS , IRS , etc.., like this we have nearly 23 services all these services are called civil services.. candidates for these services are selected through a exam called Civil Services Examination. this CSE is conducted by UPSC delhi. this exam is conducted every year.. this exam has three tier exam in these services except for IFS and IES i.e. Indian forest service and Indian Engineering Service all the remaining services will have the same syllabus.. till the end of the examination procedure every candidate will treated with same syllabus.. the only difference will appear after you select your cadre ..then only you'll be given seperate training according to the cadre they chosen.. this is all about acc. to my knowledge .. all the best for your career .. ~aditya~ |

The Civil Service examination has been divided into three satges Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT) Main Examination Interview CSAT Syllabus: Paper 1 Current events of national and international importance History of India and Indian national movement Indian and World Geography- physical, social, economic geography of India and the world Indian Polity and governance – constitution, political system, panchayati raj, public policy, Rights issues, etc. Economic and social development – sustainable development, poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector initiatives etc. General issues on environmental ecology, bio-diversity and climate change General science. Paper 2 Comprehension Interpersonal skills including communication skills Logical reasoning and analytical ability Decision making and problem solving General mental ability Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc. (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. –Class X level) English language comprehension skills (Class X level) Syllabus for the Main exam The compulsory subjects for the Main exam are one Indian language, English, Essay and General studies.
