Career in aviation
I'm a final year engineering student pursuing bachelors in Instrumentation and Control Engineering (ICE) . I'm very enthusiastic about shaping my career in aviation industry, but I'm not able to get a right direction through which I can get into this industry. I found Air India's Graduate Trainee Programme (2006) for engineers that also include engineers from Instrumentation apart from other discipline, but there has been no news of it till now.
I would like to know about the other options available, so that I can find a way to work in aviation industry though my discipline is ICE. Thank you Regards, Alakh Gulati Last edited by alakhgulati87; 23rd October 2009 at 08:07 PM. |

Re: career in aviation
Hey Alakh. A career in aviation industry is a great choice specially for those with engineering background. Career in aviation industry may mean many things: As a Pilot/ As an engineer/ As Ground-Logistics Staff. I presume you want a career in the engineering department who are responsible for the manufacturing, working and maintenance of the aircrafts.
Though there are opportunities for Instrumentation and Control Engineering students in aviation industry but they are limited. However you can think of doing M.Tech in Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering for better opportunities. M.Tech in Aeronautical Engineering is available in IIT Madras, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru and Madras Institute of Technology. Also you can do AMIE conducted by Aeronautical Society of India which is equivalent to Engineering degree in Aeronatics. Also you can find opportunities with Indian Air Force in their Technical Department without any further studies where they will themselves train you. |

Re: Career in aviation
I appreciate your valuable time for looking into the matter.
I want to ask few things regarding your previous mail. As an Instrumentation Engineer, can I pursue M.Tech in Aerospace Engineering from IIT with valid GATE score card. Secondly, I told you about Air India's Graduate Trainee Programme. Could you please suggest me about more options like that, because I'm interested in doing job after completing my B.E degree in July'10. Sincere Regards, Alakh |

Re: Career in aviation
The job of commercial pilot is the most glamorous and exciting job in aviation. It is highly rated and one of the most adventurous career which requires intensive training. This profession also demands a lot of time, dedication, patience and sacrifice.
A career in aviation attracts many youngsters as it provide opportunity to travel around the globe. This is a lucrative field. But apart from all those attractive things the job of a commercial pilot makes him responsible for the aircraft he flies and the lives of his passengers. There are a number of institutes under the recognition of the Directorate General Of Civil Aviation which conducts training in this field. Most prominent among them is Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Academy at Rae Bareli (Uttar Pradesh). Other major training centres are flying clubs at Mumbai and Delhi. To become a commercial pilot in India, one has to first possess a Student Pilot License (SPL). To get the SPL those with 10+2 with science and aged at least 16 years should register at a flying club which is recognized by Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Government of India. best of luck |
