Indian Institute of Technology is a collection or group of 15 autonomous engineering institutes. All the institutes have been declared as Institutes of National Importance by the Parliament of India. The major obejctive behind the establishment of such institutes was to have institutes of higher education which can can develop scientists and engineers for the support of economic and social development of India. An IIT council connects all the IITs and also oversees their administration. A Joint Entrance Examination is conducted for the common admission process for undergraduate admissions in all the IITs.
