R/sir, i am studying B.Tech 3rd year in computer science. Is it possible to join in the merchant navy?

hi,
i have been a 2nd officer on Merchant marine F.G ships from period 1989-1994 . I have the 'certificate of watchkeeping STCW 1978' from LBS college Bombay. I got this on 1992. Plus I also have Radar plotting course certificates/survival craft/ first aid at sea etc. from those yeras.
After 1994 I went on to pursue a different career , but now in 2010, I want to re-enter into the merchant Navy. Has anyone any experience or knowledge on what exactly I should do to re-enter. Do I have to approach the MMD or talk to a company etc...I know I will have to revalidate my papers but any ideas how.

Yes you can join merchant navy after engineering.Its a very good option for you .You can get very honourable post in merchant navy

You can join this field by the help of two entrance paper

The first one is UES exam

And the second option is UPSC exam.You can give these entrance exam after graduation or you can give this entrance exam in fianl year.

you are a B.Tech in Computer Science & Engineering student.

so you can join in indian navy in two ways.

-through UES. which exam you can appear in the final year of your btech.

-through UPSC exam. which exam you can appear after doing your btech.

OF course you can join Merchant Navy.
Apart from doing a course for marine engineering or nautical science, you can also join Merchant Navy through direct entry. You may join as engine cadet/ fifth engineer/ junior engineer and can get promotion later by writng a probationary exam arranged by the Directorate general of shipping.
Being a direct entry, you will need to go for a pre-sea course for nine months.

But it will be better to take up a degree in marine engineering or Nautical science for a better prospect in Merchant Navy.

Yes you can directly apply after completion of your Btech.
Also if you have BSc Nautical science you can become a captain in 5-7 years.
All other branches of graduation other than marine engineers have to undergo a training of 10 months either at some private training institute or the recruiting agency itself.
Some of the colleges offering merchant navy are:-The KLUB International Maritime Solutions, Kollam (Kerala)-Zenith Ocean Ship Management Pvt. Ltd., Jaipur

You can join Merchant navy directly after 9 months pre sea training course. You can also enter as junior engineer than appear for Probationary exam held by Directorate general of shipping. You will be initially appointed as deck cadet. Your eyesight should be 6/6 and there would be medical test before the candidates are selected.
