hello dear
Its very nice that you have a good potential/drive to become a Psychologist. If you already have a Degree, then do one year Diploma Course in Guidance & Counseling offered by Annmalai University, Chidambaram ( Options in Evening college & Distance Education is available) Second option, is after Graduation, you can become a member of Association of Professional Psychologists, by completing Certification course (6 months-1year) conducted by qualified Psychologists. You can set up your practice after you become a member of this association. Minimum qualification to become a Psychologist/Counselor is to have a Degree in any stream added with Diploma in Guidance/counseling or membership in association of Professional Psychologists. But, if you are seriously involved in it, then You would better do Master"s Degree in Applied Psychology to understand the subject in depth. In PG, one paper is Guidance & Counseling specialization. Psychology, offers multiple scope nowadays is in high demand. Cheers thank you |

Dear Respondents,
I have completed my bachelors in commerce and masters in business admin (marketing major). I am employed with a leading Indian IT MNC for 18 months now. My mind has always been inclined & fascinated towards the psychological angle of things at every single instance for quite sometime, though I do not have any prior formal education or exposure in the field of psychology. The career line i am now in is more of 'turn of events' than choice. I have recently come to realise that psychology is what i want to do in life. It is more intuitive to me than anything else. But I am stuck. I have exhausted the so called educational years of my life and now can not afford to quit my job and pursue psychology to get educationally qualified. But I do not want to make a career out of what I am doing right now. Psychology is what i like and want as my career for the rest of my life. Please advice how to make this transition given the whole picture of things. Many thanks in advance..! Santosh Sridhar |

Dear Maruthidevi,
I have completed my B.com and MBA (marketing). Have been employed with an Indian IT MNC for the past 18 months. This career has been more of a 'turn of events' than a choice. My mind has always been fascinated by and inclined to psychological aspect of things at every instance in my life. Although, i have only recently realized that psychology is what i want to do in life. I want to make a career in psychology...BECOME A PSYCHOLOGIST..! I do realize I am a little late to be switching careers now and have also exhausted my educational years in life. I am in no position to quit my job and spend years together to get educationally qualified and i am definitely not interested to continue what i am doing now... I am aware of the educational requirements for this role (PG, Psy.D etc.). What i seek help/advice/guidance on is - 1. What is the best (optimal & quickest) way to make this career transition from IT professional to psychologist?? - in terms of courses/degrees to pursue, association membership, intern-ship etc. 2. How can i make use of my prior educational qualification & working experience to help make this journey better?? Many thanks in advance for this...!!! Santosh Sridhar |

Now coming to your question of how to become a Psychologist in India?
Since you have completed your graduation, you are eligible for Masters in Psychology. You can straight away apply for various entrance exams conducted. I would recommend you to first read about psychology and know the correct reason to study psychology. It is an people - oriented field and you will be required to work with interact and deal with individuals. Psychology is not just reading body language. It includes how individuals learn, how memories are stored to how individuals act differently in different situations. You will required to study cognitive psychology, Developmental Psychology etc. which will test your biology. Also there are certain papers on Statistics, Research etc. I am just telling you these just to give you an idea. I would highly recommend you readin detail and than decide. Some of the top colleges are Delhi University Jamia Milia Islamia Gautam Budh University TISS Ambedkar Univerity Masters is for 2 years. You can start working as a counselor after your Post-Graduation. You can pursue some diploma. |
