Earlier most of the Merchant ship used to have Pursuer which basically performs the job of a clerk on board. But nowadays this particular job is performed by Deck Officers who are basically a Nautical Science graduate, recruited in the Navigation department. However there might be few shipping companies which still prefers a commerce graduate as a Pursuer. Apart from that candidate belonging from non science background do not have much scope in Merchant Navy.To be considered eligible for most of the jobs on board you must have studied Physics, Chemistry and Maths in your Higher Secondary level.
