Regarding your query on Subject, english is not considered a subject, you can take it as a language paper. You have to choose optional among these mentioned by UPSC :

## Mathematics
## Agriculture
## Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science
## Botany
## Chemistry
## Civil Engineering
## Commerce
## Economics
## Electrical Engineering
## Geography
## Geology
## Indian History
## Law
## Management
## Mechanical Engineering

For mains, you have to choose two optionals from these subjects, you can choose one subject optional, which you have studied in graduation, other can be any of these.

Other than these, you have to choose two language papers, one can be english and other can be any of the Indian languages mentioned in the Constitution.

For the main exam the students gets a chance to choose two optional subjects as per their taste and preferences from the list mentioned below. Please check the list properly.



So you see there is no subject called english in this list. Therefore you have to choose something else which you know you can handle properly. It is always advisable to go for the subjects which are scoring and requires you to give less attention to it. So choose wisely.
