You can surely prepare for the IAS or any other Civil Service Examination while doing your B.Tech course. In fact it is adviced to candidates who wish to apply for Indian Administrative Service or any other Civil Service Examination to start preparing well in advance.

However I would say that since you are first year student, it would be too soon for you to start preparing. The ideal time for you to start preparing would be 3rd or 4th year. This timeframe is only applicable when preparing for the Civil Service Exam on your own.

If you don't have problem with the idea of joining coaching classes to prepare for IAS, then I would say that 6-8 months would be enough. For more you should check with the good coaching center in your region. Before you take admission please make sure that the coaching centre has good track record.

Today it is almost essential to join coaching classes to prepare for Indian Administrative Service. The reason being large number of candidates who appear for the Civil Service Exam. It has lead to huge competition.

However all the hard work is worth it. IAS is important part of Bureaucracy in India. It is one of the most reputed jobs that you can find in India, not to mention well paid along with good perks as well.
