GATE stands for GRADUATE APTITUDE TEST FOR ENGINEERING.This is a very important exams for the graduates students.
The gate rank holder students can go either for the higher studies like M.Tech Or can go for the Job IN PSU sector.
But the whole process is dependent on the basis of the GATE rank.If you want to get job in NTPC then you will heve to tell me about you category and about the branch.
Because the cut off marks for Obc,sc/st,General student is diffrent.
You will get benefit if you will be from sc/st category.Thier cut off marks is much lower than the general students.
But the cut marks in 2014 for the NTPC was 72-85 marks for the general student and was 68-71 for the OBC candidate and the cut off marks for the SC/ST students was only 55 in mechanical stream.

The jobs offered through gate rank varies as per the PSUs companies.
All the government companies have their own Criteria and the different companies have their own cut-off for the gate rank holder.
