Marine Engineering is a course which many are dreaming of.....

The main positions open in the merchant navy are for navigating officers, radio officers and marine engineers.

They are usually employed by shipping companies on a contractual basis, which is generally of six to nine months' duration.

The minimum eligibility for Marine engineering is 10+2 or an equivalent examination with physics, chemistry and mathematics.

You also have to pass a medical fitness test for sea service under standard norms and with eyesight 6/6 with no color blindness.

Candidates wishing to enter the navigational and engineering fields of Merchant Navy need to complete a Bachelors degree in Nautical Science or Marine engineering.

Direct entry to Merchant Navy is also possible----

Students who have completed their 12th with PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) are eligible to join as Deck Cadets and a student holding a bachelor's degree in Mechanical/ Electrical/ Technology Engineering could also join the Merchant navy as a Engine Cadet/ Fifth Engineer/ Junior Engineer.

You will be offered jobs in the following major areas :
• By various shipping companies in the government and private sector.
• Foreign shipping companies.

Hello...

The scope in marine engineering is very bright i should say.
After completing your marine engineering you are send on the ships for months and get paid accordingly :

Fourth Engineer : $800 per/month
Third Engineer : $1200 per/month
second engineer : $ 1600 per/month
Chief Engineer : $2200 per/month

You have to pay 15 year of your service over the sea.
You have to work for complete 3 month away from family overseas, then next three month stay at home as a leave i would say the paid leave.

Good Luck....

This to all those people out there who dream of marine engineering as a highly lucrative job and a job ushering king size life.
well none of it is true.

being a marine engineer myself i believe that i have faced enough of this marine nonsensical drama and i am eligible to speak upon it.

the post would go long... so let me cut short.... there is 88% unemployment rate in marine engineering. that mean out of 100 students clearing only 12 get to be on a real ship.
secondly there are very few shore based applications for marine degree..... once marine always a marine.
thirdly the person claiming marine eng. to be highly rewarding job are the people who run these institutes who have no reagrds for your future career but only with your parents hard earned money.
so in conclusion a marine graduate would say that dont even mistakingly join merchant navy. it is a swamp covered by dollars and illusions.
