Basic Definition:

As the name suggests, it is heat engine in which the combustion of fuel takes place inside the confined space of engine and the energy developed from the combustion of fuel is used to provide mechanical power.

>>The main source of mechanical power from the high pressure gases produced from the combustion of fuel. The power is in the form of force and is applied to some part of engine like nozzle, turbine blades or pistons.

Depending upon their configuration, they are classified as:

1. Reciprocating type : most widely used. The following engines come under this category.

>>Two stroke engine

>>Four Stroke engine

>>Six Stroke engine

>>Miller cycle

2.Continuous Combustion : It has two types :Gas Turbine and Jet turbine

Applications:

Reciprocating piston engines are widely used in automobiles, motorcycles, locomotives and ships.

Also used in electric power generation.

Internal combustion Engine

An internal combustion engine (ICE) is a heat engine where the combustion of a fuel occurs with an oxidizer (usually air) in a combustion chamber that is an integral part of the working fluid flow circuit.

In an internal combustion engine the expansion of the high-temperature and high-pressure gases produced by combustion apply direct force to some component of the engine.

The force is applied typically to pistons, turbine blades, or a nozzle.

This force moves the component over a distance, transforming chemical energy into useful mechanical energy.

Types of IC engines:-

Reciprocating:

Two-stroke engine
Four-stroke engine (Otto cycle)
Six-stroke engine
Diesel engine
Atkinson cycle
Miller cycle
Axial

Rotary:

Wankel engine

Continuous combustion:

Gas turbine
Jet engine (including turbojet, turbofan, ramjet, rocket, etc.)

Internal combustible engine is a heat engine where the fuel ignition takes place with an oxidizer in a combustion chamber that act as a vital part of the working fluid flow circuit. In this engine, combustion of fuel at high temperature and high pressure results into the expansion of gases that exerts a direct force to piston, blades, turbine or nozzle of the engine.

This force brings the movement in component and results into the transformation of one form of energy into the other form. Here, in these components of the engine Chemical energy gets transformed into the Mechanical Energy.

Internal combustible engines are like two stroke engine, four stroke engine, six stroke engine and Wankel rotary Engine. These are the class 1 type of ICE i.e. Internal Combustible Engine. The 2nd class Internal Combustible Engine such as, Gas turbines, rocket engines, jet engines is based on continuous combustion of fuel.

The Internal Combustible Engines are portable and expedient to use in vehicles over electricity. They are mostly used in automobiles for propulsion, and in other portable machinery. They are applied in all automobiles, aircraft's, boats, motorcycles etc.

Internal Combustion engine or IC engine is the heart of modern automobiles.

Simply we can say that it is a heat engine in which the ignition of fuel takes places with the help of an oxidising agent inside the combustion engine.

Now due to combustion of fuel at very high temperature and pressure there is expansion of gases inside the chamber due to which a force is exerted to connected piston or turbine or nozzle of the concerned engine.

It may two strokes, four strokes or six strokes engine.

Applications of IC engines:

In automobiles for propulsion.

Motorcycles etc.
