Sir, am studying my 1st year mechanical engineering under calicut university but some of the students told me that merchant navy needs under a perticular age limit, so am totaly dipressed to hear that can i join merchan navy after completing btech in ME...? or is there any differece between BTEC MERCHANT NAVY AND 12 MERCHANT NAVY.....??? is it depends on age...????? if i can become it then what are the procedures and that couse conducting colleges in KERALA....????????

Procedure to join Merchant navy after Mechanical engineering:-

You can join the merchant Navy after mechanical engineering through the GME course.
GME stands for Graduate Engineer Course.
After completing mechanical engineering, you need to become a Marine engineer is this one year GME( Graduate Engineer Course ).

The selection for this course will be based on merit.

Procedure to join Merchant Navy after mechanical engineering course:-

Since you are from the mechanical engineering stream you need to undergo a year of pre-sea training before joining any ship.
The selection for this course will be based on merit.
Institutes like MERI, LBS offer courses in this area.
The fees for the course will be around Rs 150000 to 200000.

The only necessary specialist course is one year long. After mechanical engineering, you can join the Merchant Navy by completing the one-year GME Course. You only need to complete this one-year GME (Graduate Marine Engineer) course to become a marine engineer after finishing mechanical engineering.

Procedure to join Merchant navy
The selection process consists of
*Entrance exam
*Panel interview
*Medical exam
*Pre sea Training

Complete 1 year of pre sea Training from DG Shipping Approved Institute
Join a ship as junior engineer and work for a period of 6 months.
Clear your class 4 exams and get promoted to 4th engineer
Appear for COC and get promoted to 3rd engineer
After MEO class 2 exams , get promoted to 2nd engineer
After MEO class 1 exam , get promoted to chief engineer.

Candidates should be medically and physically fit .
Full medical checkup will be undertaken .
Complete eyesight test will also be conducted in which the distance vision should be 6/6 or 6/12 in each eye or 6/18 in one eye and 6/9 in the better eye with no colour blindness.
