The question papers of Biochemistry and Microbiology are divided into two broad sections comprising questions from each of the two subjects. The question paper pattern shifts slightly every year as some years also contain M.C.Q. questions of 20 marks. Generally, the questions comprise one essay type question of twenty marks and five short notes of six marks each. The total marks of the paper is thus 100. Essay type questions from the Microbiology are detailed discussion of pathogenesis and laboratory diagnosis of pyogenic meningitis, or biochemical characteristics of uremic syndrome. The short notes test the student on Microbiology as well as laboratory processes such as hospital waste management, laboratory diagnosis of Infective endocarditis. The pattern of the Biochemistry section is identical. Some of the essay type questions are liver function tests, tests conducted to diagnose jaundice. The short note sections contain questions such as Electrophoresis and its applications, renal function tests etc.
