Counselling and Health Psychology is a branch of Applied Psychology, the objective of which is to provide a thorough and complete knowledge in the field of counselling and therapy to learners in order to help deal with clients in future. Counselling is basically talking with patients about their mental problems and disturbances. So the course delineates those topics that are crucial in counselling. It emphasises on the definitions and principles of counselling drafting the basic concepts, purpose and importance. It then plans out the types of counselling along with the steps in the counselling process. Topics considered in light of counselling issues include ethical and professional hazards like dealing with counsellor’s own anxiety and self-disclosure, areas of counselling like educational, clinical, occupational, rehabilitation, emergency and old age counselling, approaches to counselling such as directive, non-directive and eclectic and appraisal techniques namely case-study, interview, cumulative record, rating scale and observation in Indian context.
