VMOU M.A. in English- English Literature (The Victorian Age) (MAEG-05) Papers are aimed to provide students with an understanding of the period extending after the Romantic age and preceding the Modernist. Questions can be asked on background as well as on specific texts. The specific texts from which questions may be asked include Gerald Manley Hopkins’ poem “Carrion Comfort”, the role of the dramatic monologue in putting forth the meaning of “Grammarian’s Funeral”, certain theme based discussions of Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s poems, the character analysis of the major characters of George Eliot’s novel “Silas Marker”, Emily Bronte’s novel “Wuthering Heights”, the role played by destiny and chance in the novel “The Return of the Native” by Thomas Hardy and so on. Even non fictional prose is a part of the syllabus, like John Stuart Mills’ essay “On the Subjection of Women”, Thomas Carlyle’s “The Hero as Poet”, and Ruskin’s “Unity of Art”.
