You must have completed 12th in any stream, commerce, arts or science from a recognised board. In India, many universities have their own entrance exams for journalism courses like IIMC Entrance Exam, Delhi University Bachelor of Mass Media and Mass Communication Entrance Exam, IPU CET, etc.

The most appropriate field is humanities. The three core topics are political science, economics, and English. The remaining two subjects include History, Geography, Psychology, Sociology, Intellectual Property, Physical Education, and Legal Studies to become a journalist.

Re: Which stream should I opt to become a journalist?
There is no compulsion. You can take up a course, either undergraduate or postgraduate, in journalism with any stream. While there is certainly no compulsion, you should have an idea of what kind of journalism you want to get into. If you want to take up specific fields, such as online journalism, or say scientific journalism, or financial journalism, or other such stuff, then you may opt for the stream that shall groom you for it, such as Science with a computers-related subject or Commerce, but journalism at large remains a humanities’ sphere, and an upbringing in Humanities stream, and an undergraduate course in Humanities, such as History or Political Science, should groom you very well for either a masters in journalism, or for a career in journalism if you do not want to go for masters.
