The foundation stone for Kurukshetra University was laid in the year 1956 by the first president of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad. It was formed as a residential university and it is situated at the sacred city of Kurukshetra, which is the land of Bhagwad Gita. The campus of the university is spread over an area of 400 acres located at the western bank of the holy tank known as Brahm Sarover.

Initially, the university was started only with Sanksrit department, but now it has grown as a multi-faculty university for advanced research and study in the state of Haryana. The vision of the university is to be widely acknowledged as a prominent seat of higher learning and to strive hard to become as a centre of academic excellence by developing the frontiers of knowledge. The mission of Kurukshetra Univerity is to prepare a class of professionals and students with enviable competencies and ingrained human values, dedicated towards the development of society through application, creation and preservation of knowledge in the emerging global.

The university is offering education under nine different faculties of education namely, commerce & management, law, Engineering & Technology, Indic. Studies, education, science, life sciences, social sciences and arts & languages. In addition to several facilities included in the campus, the university also includes a central library located in a three storey air-conditioned building within 49,230 square feet plinth area and the extension of the same is under progress.
