Gandhigram Rural Institute came into existence in the year 1956 and the university is located in the city of Dindigul at the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The institute was established for carrying on the Nai Talim System of the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi. In the year 1976, the institute was conferred the status of Central Deemed University by the University Grants Commission located in New Delhi under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. The university is wholly funded by the University Grants Commission and it was given the name as Gandhigram Rural University according to the guidelines of the University Grants Commission.
