Electrical machine design is the study of the machine designing for conversion of mechanical energy to electrical energy. Knowledge in machine designing is a prerequisite for the electrical engineers and for the optimum usage of electrical equipment. The students of Electrical and Electronic Engineering have to study this paper in the 5th SEM.

Importance of paper:

The paper is very important for the successful completion of electrical engineering. The knowledge in machine designing is very important for the designing and application of the electrical. There are many applications in controllers and machine designing. The limitations which come around in machine designing are known only by its sound knowledge.

Paper Pattern:

The paper is broadly divided into two parts; part A and part B. part A consists of 10 questions in which all questions are compulsory to answer. The second part: part B consists of 10 questions out of which only 5 are to be answered. Part A consists of all short questions which carry 2 marks each, whereas the questions in the second part carry.

Frequently asked questions:

DC machine loss, eddy currents loss, windage loss, hysteresis loss, copper loss, capacity of a transformer, synchronous and asynchronous machines, air gap harmonic flux, magnetic permeability, electrical resistivity, leakage reactance of transformers, use of fractional shot winding, hydro electric generator, SCR and its effect on the performance of synchronous machines, types of rotating machines, effect of air gap length on overload capacity of induction motor, phenomenon of cogging and crawling, constructional details in rotor windings used in hydro and turbo generators etc.

Time and marks:

The paper is of a total of 80 marks and the students get a maximum of 3 hours for the paper.

Recommended books:
