Scope of Cryogenics in India
Cryogenics is a branch of science which deals with the compounds and elements at very low temperatures. This branch of science follows absolute or Kelvin scale of temperature. In cryogenics, the students are taught with the behavior of a substance at -273 K. This course has three subdivisions – Cryobiology, Cryoelectronics, and Cryonics. Cryobiology deals with the preservation of organisms at extremely low temperatures. Cryoelectronics deals with the superconducting nature of elements and compounds at very low temperatures. Cryonics is the study of the preservation of humans and animals for future resurgence.
Cryogenic Courses
Many institutes offer Cryogenic courses at Master, Bachelor, and Research based levels. A few courses are listed below.
- Master of Technology in Cryogenic Engineering
- Bachelor of Technology in Cryogenic Engineering
- Master of Engineering in Mechanical-Cryogenic Engineering
- Master of Engineering in Cryogenic Engineering
- Research in Cryogenics
- Bachelor of Engineering in Cryogenic Engineering
Colleges that offer Cryogenic Courses
There are only a few colleges in India that offer Cryogenic courses. These include:
- Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore
- L.D College of Engineering, Gujarat
- Gujarat Technological University, Gujarat
- T.K.M College of Engineering, Kerala
- Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur
Opportunities in Cryogenics
Cryogenics is a highly developed and focused branch of scientific study. The study includes the possible changes that are caused in the inherent properties of a substance at extreme cool condition. For pursuing this course, the candidates require intelligence beyond the normal level. The career opportunity in this field is quite promising. However, it not an easy task to become a cryogenics expert as it requires deep knowledge and highly developed analytical skills. The developments and the latest researches in this field are of great advantage. These improvements depict the prospective growth this field will have in future. Some applications of cryogenics are Electric power transmission, Forward looking infrared (FLIR), Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Blood banking, Frozen food, etc. Recently, there are some new developments in cryogenics. They are Stirling cryocoolers, Pulse cryocoolers, and the use of magnets as refrigerators and regenerators.
There are several job opportunities for a cryogenic expert in the fields of space research and aerospace expeditions, defense research, bio medical field, metallurgical industries, etc. Opportunities in Cryogenics are focused and it always attracts the people with the best skills. Cryogenic gases are used for fuelling the space vehicles. Cryogenic methods are used in distributing and storing liquefied natural gas. The scholars in this field can find job opportunities in National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), and Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC). Some of the qualified professionals in this field are also appointed by academic institutes across India.
