which is the best subject for an computer science student can take for ias exam.....?

For a b.tech cs student there are only two options they are Electrical engineering and Mathematics but both are very tough and electrical engineering as an optional for a cs student will to too hard to learn, so better choose some other electives according to your interest, well in my openion a student from CS branch could not really qualify the IAS with taking mathematics and electricals as their their subjects these will actually be very hard for them to get through but you can choose out of other subjects and can also get good guidance in it from various coaching institutes which can pprovide you sufficient study materials regarding your subject of choice....i hope you got my point .well best of luck for the exams and i hope you excel in them and your decision be a fruitful one .. take care..

you have not your subject in this exam so you choose other
subject in your convenience....
i suggest you .history,poltical science..

of any good city of india...(price 20 RS)
you get form..
then fill ..there after you send it UPSC board...
then try to prepare your self for this exam ,
date of notification;02.01.2010
date of prelim exam:23.05.2010
and date of mains exam:29.10.2010
because it is toughest exam in india...

i think think that you must opt for public administration it is quite scoring

About Preliminary Exam preparation,
- one paper is optional i.e. your choice
- One paper is compulsory i.e. General Studies.

- Now i will tell you how to prepare for General Studies(GS) paper.
- if one wants to have command over GS, then he has to prepare 8 major area i.e.
History
Geography
Polity
Science
Economy
Mental Abiltiy
Current Affairs
General Knowledge.

- For all the above topics, best way to start is from Basics i.e. NCERT Books of Class 6th to Class 12th.
- For History - NCERT + Spectrums Modern India
- Geography - NCERT + GoCheng leong + a good atlas like orient longman/oxford.
- Polity - NCERT + any good guide book like laxmikanth's indian polity/ Jojo mathews's Indian constitution and polity.
- Science - i think Ncert class 6th to class 12th is more than enough.
- Economy - NCERT class 11th and 12th + pratiyogita darpan's special issue on indian economy + Read and make notes of newspaper about current economy.
- Mental Ability - R.s.Agarwal.
- Current Affairs - one has to be thorough with newspaper readings of atleast one year back from the date of exam.
- General Knowledge - India year book + Manorama year book or Chronicle year book.

- if one is thorough with the above topics from the above materials, then he/she will definitely crack this exam easily.

2.general studies
optional subject depends upon your interest and command on the subject.

Machine instructions and addressing modes,
ALU and data-path,

as you are graduate in computer science, so you can't get advantage because computer science is not a subject in UPSC syllabus.

you can choose any 2 subjects among 22 subjects provided by UPSC.

For a CS background candidate, Maths and Physics are the best options.

1) Psychology
2) Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science
3) Public Administration
4) Agriculture

As you are from computer science & engg. so you must choose following subjects :-

Though this subjects are not particularly of your stream but as you have read Physics,Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering in your semester so i suggest you to go for these subjects. Good Luck.

there are no optonals which are directly related to computers stream but

mathematics

stastics and related optionals are well managed by the students of computer science stream

also don't depend on your stream too

you have facility too select which ever subject your interested apart from your course
