Introduction
Home Science is defined as the study built on disciplines for gaining optimum well-being of the home and family life, within a changing society. This management is based on scientific research and knowledge that pertains to the home as well as the outside world. The subjects involved are hygiene, rural development, community living, art, food, clothing, textiles and home management etc. making Home Science a wonderful learning tool for better living. Home Science is both a science and an art related to modern housekeeping. It is an academic discipline extremely popular among girl students. The course is not necessarily aimed making women better housewives, but useful to the society to enable them to provide expert advice to enrich social and family life. It is a very activity oriented subject; hence stress has been laid on the suggestion and inclusion of many activities and small projects. The learners are expected to complete these projects using resources from the immediate environment so that they actively participate in the learning process. The broad objective of teaching Home Science is achieved by sensitizing the learners towards their role in family and society, developing skills which will help them to manage change in their own lives, developing a scientific temper and spirit of inquiry and developing a lifelong ability to absorb knowledge and use it for problem solving in day to day living.

Kinds of Jobs Nature of Work and Employment Areas
Production jobs This covers food preservation, dressmaking, specialized cooking. Graduates of Home Science can go on to enter the garment business, fashion designing etc. or even work in hotels, the food industry etc.
Research jobs These projects involve educating specific segments of the population such as mothers, farmers, and villagers on the food value of certain food items.
Sales jobs Sales promotion of food items (baby foods) are given to home science graduates after they gain relevant information and experience.
Service jobs Maintenance and supervision of housekeeping departments at tourist resorts, hotels, catering facilities, restaurants etc.
Teaching jobs The recognized qualification for a primary school teacher is a Bachelors degree in Home Science and many postgraduates also are taken on as senior secondary school and college teachers.
Technical jobs Manufacturing industries do require home science graduates to serve as research assistants for their projects.
Home Science graduates can seek careers in the fields of community and social work as well as in NGO’s food and nutrition related activities in hospitals, and food services. Apart from working in the above areas of joining the teaching profession, they can also work independently as family counselors. The opportunities for home science graduates lie mainly in the non-governmental organizations.

Personal Attributes
A person opting for a career in this field needs to have a logical mind along with realistic approach, and a balanced attitude. Creativity with artistic visualization is also necessary. To be in the field one has to have an analytical mind and scientific acumen. It is a field for those who enjoy the practical work.

How to Enter
Aspiring students can take up Home Science as a part of their class XII curriculum. However, for doing an undergraduate programme in home science a student needs to pass the 10+2 exam preferably with science subjects (physics, chemistry, biology) and at least 50% marks. Students from others streams can apply too.
