There are no special requirements for appearing for the IPS exam as it is part of the Civil Services examination.

You must be at least 21 years of age at the time of filling the Civil Services (Preliminary) Exam form and not more than 30 years of age (various relaxations are available for different categories).
You must possess a graduate degree in any discipline of any of the Universities incorporated by an Act of Central or State legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification.

Required Eligibility Criteria For Becoming An IPS Officer

In order to become an IPS Officer you need to clear the Civil Services Examination conducted by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission)


Eligibility Criterion :-

A candidate can appear for the Civil Service Examination only if :-

IPS stands for Indian Police Service one of the most prestigious designation in India after Indian Administrative Service(IAS).
The examination is conducted by UPSC and numerous of candidates take the examination. UPSC stands for Union Public Service Commission.
The examination is will consist of 2 parts;

~written examination-having 5 papers in it each consisting 200 marks each.

• Paper I and II have objective type question and 2 hours time
• Paper III is English Language have descriptive type questions and time given is 3 hours.
• Paper IV is Essay have descriptive type questions and time given is 3 hours
• Paper V is General Studies having descriptive type questions and time is 3 hours.

~Interview is conducted after written examination for Personality Test.marks is 200.

#the paper III marks is not counted for merit marking. It is only qualifying in nature. thus the total marks of written exam and interview is 1000.

for getting qualified in IPS the candidate must fulfill some special physical criteria even if he/she have clear the written exams.

The eligibility criteria for appearing in the IPS examination are:
1)the candidate should be a citizen of India;
2)the age limitation is from 21 to 30 years for general and the age is relaxed by 3-5 years for the SC/ST/OBC.
3)the candidate must have a bachelor degree from a recognized university (10+2+3).

during the interview physical test is conducted and the criteria which should be fulfilled by the candidates are as follows:

1)minimum height for general male candidates is 165 cm and for general female is 150cm.
minimum height for schedule tribe(not sc) and races such as Gorkhas, Garhwalias, Assamese, Nagaland Tribals etc. is 160cm for male and 145 cm for female.

2) the minimum chest girth fully expanded: 84cm for male and 79 for female. expansion of 5cm is needed.

3)presence of squint is a disqualification,

4)distance vision:better eye->6/6 or 6/9 and worse eye-> 6/12 or 6/9.
near vision:better eye->J1 and worse eye->J2
correction permitted: spectacles
color vision required:high grade
binocular vision:yes

5)total myopia(including cylinder) maximum is -4.00D
total hypermetropia(including cylinder) maximum is +4.00D

6)no stammering

7)blood pressure(high): between 120-129

There is no specific exam as IPS exam. IPS(Indian Police Service), to become an IPS officer one has to appear and crack Civil Service Exam conducted by UPSC once every year.

Age requirement:

During the year of applying for the examination the candidate must have attained 21 years of age on 1st of August. So, minimum age limit is 21 years and the maximum age limit is 30 in the case of candidates coming under general category and 33 for OBC candidates and 35 for candidates coming under SC/ST category. In the case of ex-servicemen an age relaxation of 5 more years is given.

Educational qualification:

The candidate must be a degree holder of any discipline from a recognized university. The candidates who are in the final year of their degree course can also apply for the examination. Candidate who have completed their M.B.B.S., but not have completed the required internship during the time of submission of the application to the main examination will be provisionally admitted for the main examination.

Physical qualification for IPS:

Height: The male candidate should be 165cm and female candidate should be 150cm for general category candidates. In the case of candidates coming under SC/ST/OBC the height required is 160cm for male and 145cm for female.

Chest: Minimum requirement in the case of male candidates is 84cm and they should be able to expand the chest for 5cm. In the case of female candidates the minimum requirement is 79cm and they should be able to expand the chest for 5cm.

Eye sight: 6/12 or 6/9 distant vision for worse eye and 6/6 or 6/9 distant vision for good eye. Near vision for worse eye is J2 and for good eye is J1.

The physical standards are essential for IPS, which includes weekly run for 10kms in 60 minutes, rope climbing, horse riding, PT obstacles, etc…
