What are the career options available to me after M.Sc Biotechnology from VIT, Vellore?


Sir/Madam,

I have just completed M.Sc in Biotechnology from VIT Vellore. Kingly guide me what are the options available for me after completing the M.Sc? Should I go for higher studies and if yes, then what are the courses available here in India and abroad?

The list of universities (India & Abroad) and any other details like fee, course duration & scholarships etc, if possible.

As biotechnology is a booming area in the field of science and technology and now, demand or opportunities for biotechnologists are growing day by day in India.
After completing your post graduation in biotechnology, you can opt for one of th following:
  • You can do PhD in any area of your interrest.
  • Or you can join research lab to work on a project (eg. JRF posts for projects in an institute/organization) for a time being.
  • You are eligble for teaching at a school or college level as a Lecture(PGT or TGT)
  • Apply for Assistant Professor after qualifying UGC/CSIR-NET/SET exam.
    • Public Sector Organisation jobs:
    • Scientific assistant,
    • Research analyst,
    • Medical affairs Director,
    • Biostatistician
    • Process development technician etc.
    • Some of the major government organizations that recruit biotechnologists are listed below.
    • Rajiv Gandhi Center for Biotechnology (RGCB), Kerala
    • All India Biotech Association (AIBA), New Delhi
    • Biotech Consortium India Limited, New Delhi
  • Apply as trainee in biotech or pharmaceutical companies like:
    • Biocon,
    • Panacea ,
    • Shantha biotech,
    • Sun pharma,
    • Dr Reddy's lab
    • Johnson & Johnson
    • Cipla,
    • Baxter,
    • MerckBio-ceramics,
    • Torrent Pharma,

Note: To get a better job opportunities in various research and development department of companies, you have to qualify any of the national level exam like DBT NET, CSIR NET, GATE, ARS NET, ICMR JRF, etc, as the preferences are given to such candidates.

If you are interested in pursue PhD, then the very first, you have to choose an area in which you are intereted or you want specialization. The selected topic or area will help to find an appropriate college, institute or place from where you can pursue your PhD.
After selecting area, get acceptance through mail from proffessor who work in the relevant field.
