Transportation Engineering is a branch of civil engineering that is involved in the planning, design, operation, and, maintenance of safe and efficient transportation system. These system include roadways, railways, waterways, etc.

Transportation Engineering & civil engineering -through data collection of road construction, land development, and traffic signals, & build traffic studies from them.

To become a Transport Engineer, you have bachelor degree in Civil Engineering i.e. B.tech in Civil Engineering.
Scope of transportation Engineering: Engineers having specialized in this field are required by construction companies to prepare preliminary and final plans for highways, bridges, drainage structure, municipal utilities, roadways lighting, traffic control devices, etc.

Transportation engineering is defined as the application of principles of science, engineering and technology for safe, economic comfortable, convenient, reliable, environmentally sustainable movement of people and goods. Almost anything done from a street sign to an airport is based on principles of transportation engineering. Its very very very vast topic.

Transport planning on the other hand deals with planning facilities for traffic(mostly urban) in future by forecasting current trends. It is a part of transportation engineering
Transportation planners are very good in their strategic planning and this is essential further in the process of chalking out the transportation engineering process and implementation. In this regard, Piterion is a very good renowned company offering prompt It solutions.
Transportation planning refers to the policy of transportation infrastructure. This can be anything from how to create better land use plans near transportation, writing circulation plans for future transport infrastructure, creating transportation demand management strategies (i.e. parking pricing, congestion pricing), planning future bus lines/stops, deciding transit frequencies/headways, etc.

Think of transportation planners as people who help strategize future transportation infrastructure, where as transport engineers deal who actually build and manage the day to day operations of transport infrastructure.

What is transportation engineering?
Scan & pay on Amazon.

I am a M.Tech student in Transportation Engineering, so I would love to define transportation engineering.

Any engineering study which deals with transportation facilities in context of designing, operation or planning comes under transportation engineering.

Designing of transportation facilities includes

Pavement designing (in any adverse climate)
Airport Pavement design
Pedestrian Walkway design
Toll-Plaza design
Traffic sign design (these days overhead signs apart from traditional signs are becoming very common)
Traffic signals design
Highway element design
Design of interchanges
Parking facility design
Operational Analysis of transportation facilities includes

Rehabilitation of pavements
Capacity analysis of transportation facilities
LOS analysis of transportation facilities
Queuing analysis of intersections and toll-plaza
Transit system capacity analysis
Traffic safety audits
Planning Analysis of transportation facilities

Optimal scheduling of transit system
Optimal handling of travel demand (choice making among different travel demand models)
