There is no direct recruitment at the post of Commissioner in Income Tax department.

Candidates are eligible to get the post through the promotion. So, you have to appear and qualify in the Civil Service Examination conducted by UPSC for recruitment as an I.R.S Officer. I.R.S Officers are eligible for recruitment as commissioner in future.

Civil Service Examination is conducted for recruitment of Income tax commissioner.

So, you can appear and qualify in the examination to become commissioner in Income tax department in your later future.

To become an income tax inspector a candidate must appear for the SSC CGL(Staff Selection Commission conducts the Combined Graduate Level) examination for the recruitment into various government departments. The educational qualification required to apply for this examination is a candidate must have passed a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized university. The candidate's age should not exceed 30 years.

You have to appear in SSC CGL Exam and you have to get qualifying marks for the post of commissioner of income tax.

Personal interview

You will have to take up the Civil Services Exam (the same as for IAS, IPS etc). Once you clear the preliminary, you will have to prepare for the mains.
While choosing the options ( such as IAS, IPS, IFS etc), you will have to choose IRS ( Indian Revenue Services). If you clear the exam and the interview, you will become the Commissioner of Income Tax.

--- There two examinations conducted for Commissioner of Income Tax.

The first one is SSC CGL examination that is conducted by Staff Selection Commission every year and the second one is civil services examination that is conducted by Union Public Service Commission every year.

The minimum education qualification needed to apply for these examinations is graduation in any stream from a recognised University of India or foreign university.

One can get selected as Income Tax Officer after clearing SSC CGL exam (Pre + Mains) which is followed by an Interview, Physical Fitness and Medical Tests.
