You cannot directly apply for PhD course after completion of MA course.
TO get admission in Phd Course, you should qualify in UGC NET exam.
Your master's degree marks must be above 55% marks from a recognised University.

You can do PhD, if you want to receive a doctoral degree. It completely depends on your choice and interest. You can choose the degree or any other course as per your career choice. if you want to become a teacher in a school, in that case, you can go for MEd and if you want to become a professor or lecturer in a college then you can go for PhD course. Both options are available for you but you need to decide which career path you want to choose.

Aspirants are eligible to pursue a phd course only if they have completed their Master's degree in a similar course / field / stream in which they want to pursue a phd.
Some colleges are specify that candidates need to have completed an M.phil to pursue phd course offered by them.

It is completely dependent on your career objective, PhD is definitely the best option in long term if you are interested in making career in a research field or professorship.

Further, you can directly go for PhD after completion of M.A. degree course with at least 55% marks in aggregate from a recognized university. Marks relaxation of 5% is allowed in case of unreserved category candidates.
