SNDT Women’s University was initially established as a women’s college in the year 1916 and later it was developed as SNDT Women’s University. SNDT in the name of the university stands for Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey and it holds the pride of being the first women university in whole of South-East Asia. The jurisdiction of the university is spread over the whole state of Maharashtra and there are some special provisions in the Maharashtra University Act 1994 for this university. Right from its inception, the university has been striving to achieve newer heights in outreach and performance. Its vision is to build a citadel of learning for women. The single-minded mission of the university is to ensure empowerment of women through education. SNDT Women’s University has been accredited with five-star status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council and the University Grants Commission has approved the University Under its Act 1956. The university has three campuses at Churchgate, Juhu and Pune respectively in the city of Mumbai and one more campus at Ahmedabad. Of the three campuses in Mumbai, the campus at Churchgate is the main campus and more than 15 educational departments and school of library and information science is functioning in this campus.
