Cartography is the field which involves the study and practice of making geographical maps. Cartographers are the extensively trained professionals who carry out the cartography tasks. They measure and map the surface of Earth and related components. The cartographers are said to be a part of a large team of mapping scientists. They have to gather the geographic information using survey data and aerial photographs taken by satellites or aircrafts. This information is used to prepare clear and precise maps, drawings or charts of large areas of surface of earth. They gather the information and perform the geographical research. The maps designed by these professionals describe the physical and social characteristics on specific land areas.

Qualifying Exam

Candidates who are interested in this cartography field usually require at least a bachelor’s degree in engineering or physical science or cartography or geography. They can also pursue undergraduate degree in drafting, mathematics and surveying and measurements. Computer knowledge such as computer assisted design (CAD), computer-assisted mapping (CAM), satellite navigation, and computer-assisted cartography (CAC) is essential. In some situations, they are also required to do fieldwork in order to get an exposure in cartography. Most of the countries will require licensing for cartographers and the licensing requirements may vary depending on the country or state where the candidates wish to work.

Who is eligible to apply?

Students need to successfully complete their higher secondary education with PCB or PCM of any recognized board so as to apply for the bachelor’s degree programme. Many universities in India offer the undergraduate degree in cartography, geography, physical sciences. After completing the undergraduate degree in any of these disciplines, they must gain the relevant experience in this field.

Skills required for a Cartographer

They need good hearing ability and eyesight, since these qualities are necessary for observing the land spaces. Good communication and interpersonal skills are also essential.
