see, you can appear only two times in the IIT JEE exam.

that means if you are in 12th then in the appearing year of 12th and next year of 12th you can appear in the IIT JEE exam.

other eligibility criteria are

>>12th science with PCM subjects.

>>minimum 60% marks in 12th.

a person can give twice the IIT exam i,e
the class 12 passing year and the next year.
for instance ,
if he passed class 12 in 2011 then he can give IIT 2011 exam and next year
2012 exam only otherwise not allowed.

A person can give IIT JEE twice in consecutive years only . Eligibility for IIT JEE and AIEEE

For appearing in IIT JEE..you need to fulfill the following conditions :-

1) You should have an aggregate of 60% or above in Physics,Chemistry and Maths in 12th boards

2) You can appear for IIT JEE only 2 times..once in the year of passing of your 12th and the other in the next consecutive year..

For appearing in AIEEE :-

1) You should have 50% or above as aggregate in Physics,Chemistry and Maths in 12th boards..

2) You can appear 3 times in AIEEE

For both IIT JEE and AIEEE..you should be within 25 years of age..

The IIT JEE forms will be released on 11th November,2011 and the last date for form submission is 15th December,2012..

The AIEEE forms shall be available in the month of December..

As per the rules you can take Maximum Two times but it depends on your age .for the details of The IIT JEE 2013 Eligibility Criteria refer below.
1.Date of Birth:
The candidates belonging to OBC/General category, who are born on or after the first week of October 1988 will satisfy IIT JEE 2013 Eligibility Criteria.
However, the candidates of PD/SC/ST category who are born on or after the first week of October 1983 will be eligible.

2. Year of Passing Qualifying Examination (QE):
The IIT JEE 2013 Eligibility Criteria says that the candidate must have either passed QE on or after the first week of October 2013 in first Attempt, or should be appearing in 2013 for the first time.
Candidates, who will be appearing for their QE later than the last week of September 2013, are not eligible.
A list of various QE and Boards of education has been given in the IIT JEE Website/Brochure. Candidates should go through it carefully to get a better idea of IIT JEE 2013 Eligibility Criteria.

3. Minimum Pass Percentage in QE:
To satisfy the IIT JEE 2013 Eligibility Criteria, the OBC/General candidates have 60% as the lower limit.
However, the ST/SC/PD candidates should secure a minimum of 55% marks to satisfy IIT JEE 2013 Eligibility Criteria.

4. Number of JEE Attempts:
A candidate can have maximum number of 02 Attempts in consecutive years irrespective of whether he/she has passed the QE.
Therefore, according to IIT JEE 2013 Eligibility Criteria candidates who have given IIT JEE in 2011 or earlier are not allowed to give IIT JEE 2013.

You get the 2 chances for appear on the Jee- main entrance exam. One in the after passing 12th and another after the next year. If you cleared the jeemain after that you are eligible for the jee-advance exam.
