It includes characterization (introduction, architectural and fundamental models), inter-process communication (API for IP, marshaling, client server communication), distributed objects and remote invocation (communication, RPC), OS support (layer, protections, threads and processes, architecture), distributed file system(network file system, Sun and Andrew systems), name services (domain name, directory and discovery services), transaction and concurrency control (nested, locks, optimistic control, time stamping, comparison methods), distributed transaction (flat and nested, atomic commit protocol, dead locks), multimedia systems (characteristics, data, quality of service and resource management), shared memory(design and implementation issues, consistency)

Paper Pattern: Question paper on Distributed systems will have a total of 8 questions and candidates are required to choose any 5. Each question will have 12 marks each allotted to them.

Key Points: Case studies on unix, Java RMI, global name service, tiger video file server, CORBA may be asked at the respective sections.
