Indian writing in English seeks to focus primarily on the English literature that has developed in the Indian subcontinent over the years. It is also a means of charting the historical and cultural impact of the country on its developing literature right from the colonial to the post colonial and modern times. Some of the topics are understanding poets like Toru Dutt and her poetry in capturing complete natural landscape, Sarojini Naidu and the lyricism in her poetry, Ezekiel in the way he talked of love and bird catching, studying the development of characters and backdrop in Mulk Raj Anand’s Untouchables and Raja Rao’s Kanthapura, and looking at autobiographies like that of Indira Goswami’s which show the struggles for survival of widow in an Indian society. Furthermore this course helps the students to critically appreciate some of the masterpieces of Indian authors and poets for a better understanding of the regional works produced in literature.
