Chatra District is one among the 24 districts in the Indian state of Jharkhand and the district has the city of Chatra as its administrative headquarters. The district is spread over an area of 3706 km2 and it had a population of more than 8,00,000 according to a census conducted in the year 2001.

The present territory covered by the district was earlier known as Chatra sub-division of the Hazaribagh District and the present district came into existence in the year 1991. In the year 2006, the government of India names the Chatra District as one the country’s 250 most backward districts and it is one of the 21 districts earning funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme. Chatra District is surrounded by the Ranchi District, Hazaribagh District, Gaya District and Palamu district.

Educationally, Chatra District has a medium status and it has only two colleges namely Chatra college and Hunderganj College.  Of these colleges, the Chatra College works as the constituent unit of Vinoba Bhave University. As mentioned earlier, Chatra College acts as a constituent unit of the Vinoba Bhave University. the college offers degree courses through its commerce, computer science, science, education and arts departments. The institute also offers Bachelor of Education course with approval from the National Council for Teachers Education. The Science department offers degree courses in mathematics, chemistry, physics subjects and it is planning to introduce course in biology as well. The college also has a Bachelor of Computer Applications department that offers Computer Application courses at the UG level. The college came into existence in the year 1961 and in the year 2004, it is also acting as a study centre of Indira Gandhi National Open University.

Thus, the district of Chatra in the Indian state of Jharkhand is served by this single government college and there is also a private college in the district offering course in arts, science and commerce faculties. However, most of the students of the district try to seek admission to the government college rather than private college since the government college is known to offer the best education at affordable cost with several financial assistance to meritorious and poor students. Chatra College being a single public college offers the best education attracting students from different parts of the state of Jharkhand.
