Indian Institute of Technology carries out a Joint Admission Test (JAM) so as to admit the eligible candidates to the B.Sc and M.Sc programmes in the IITs. The main objective of the JAM is to offer admission to various M.Sc and B.Sc programmes through a single window and to consolidate “Science’ as the career alternative to the bright students across the country. The JAM exam is expected to be the standard exam to be followed across the country so as to normalize the undergraduate level science education in the country.
The various programmes in IITs portray high quality education when compared with other institutes of the country. These programmes enhance the student to develop academic talent which leads to a rewarding and challenging professional life.
Structure of IIT JAM Entrance Exam
The question papers for both Biotechnology and Computer applications are designed in an objective manner. For the other subjects the question papers consists of objective and subjective questions. If 30% of the questions are objective questions, then 70% questions will be of subjective type. There are negative markings for all the wrong choice of answers made in the objective type questions. For every wrong answer 1/3 marks are reduced.

Eligibility Criteria
The candidate should possess an aggregate of 55% marks for all the subjects including the languages for their qualifying degree examination. The candidates those who fall under SC/ST category need to posses only 50% marks for their qualifying degree examination. The degree certificate has to be submitted by the candidate as a proof against the qualifying degree. All the candidates those who have obtained the admission to the various courses have to submit a fitness certificate from a medical practitioner. The selected candidates usually have to undergo a medical test that is conducted by the institute. If the candidate is not found to be fit to pursue this course, then the admission of the candidate gets cancelled.
How to Apply?
The candidates can obtain the application forms from the various banks across the country as well as from the IITR JAM office. It can be procured by paying an amount of Rs 1000/- against the application fees. The female aspirants need to pay only an amount of Rs 500/- for the same. Candidates can also apply online. The candidates those who are applying online have to draw a demand draft in favor  of the “Chairman JAM, IIT Bombay” and it should be payable at Bombay. Male candidates have to obtain a demand draft of Rs 900/- and the female candidates have to pay Rs 800/- as the application fees. The completed application forms have to be sent by speed post to the Chairman, JAM 2012, IIT Bombay, Powai, Mumbai and it has to reach on or before the first of November.

Study Plan
The most essential thing in preparation for entrance exam is the wise utilization of the available time
  • Plan and create an effective study plan
  • Prepare key notes while you study.
  • Candidates should revise these notes every day.
  • Priority should be given to difficult portions first and then study the easy portions
  • Regular studies will help you to prepare the subject like Physics and Chemistry better.
  • Take breaks in between because it helps you in increasing the concentration.
  • Refer the previous question papers and keep yourself updated.
  • Cover more portions during weekends and on public holidays
The candidates have to make sure that they study at least for three to four hours a day.
How and Where To Get the Results?
The results can be obtained from the official website of Joint Admission Test on the specified date of publication of the results. The official website of the JAM examination is www.iitb.ac.in/jam. Candidates can login to this website to retrieve any information regarding Joint Admission Test.
Score Validity
The score obtained through Joint Admission Test conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology is valid for one year. The candidate has to reappear for the entrance examination in the next year if he/she has failed to obtain the admission against the allotted seat.
