Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering & Technology precisely called as SLIET is an autonomous body functioning with the funds offered by the Government of India and it is controlled by the SLIET Society, which is registered under Societies Registration Act 1860. The institute is conferring its own PG, UG, Diploma and certificate courses with recognition from the All India Council for Technical Education since it is a deemed university.

The institute was established by the Human Resource and Development Ministry of Indian Government in the year 1989 and it was inaugurated formally on the 20th of December 1991. The institute was established with the objective of acting as an international podium for the transfer and development of technical competence in the field of education. The institute is committed to offer the best possible technical education and for catering towards the requirements of technical manpower with focus on practical training in industry.

For admission of students to the different courses offered by the Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering & Technology different entrance examinations for Certificate, diploma, degree and PG courses are conducted by the university on its own. Admission test for certificate courses is called as SET-I, SET-II is meant for admissions to Diploma courses and SET-III is meant for admission to degree courses and SET-VI is meant for PG courses. These tests are commonly called as SLIET Entrance Tests.

Apart from educational courses, the university is also engaged in offering extension services and research and development activities are also taken up by the university. The institute offers several services like training & placement cell, internet, equal opportunities cell, curriculum development cell, extracurricular activities, student activities centre, sports, health centre, computing facilities, central library and hostel facilities to the students. The university has also signed Memorandum of Understandings with reputed institutes and industries of higher learning and some more MOUs are going to be signed by the university with a view of attracting expertise available with these institutions for the development of SLIET and its students.

Departments like management & humanities, physics, mathematics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, food engineering & technology, electrical & instrumentation engineering, electronics & communication engineering, chemical technology and computer science engineering are functioning under the university for offering education in these disciplines and the university also has a persons with disability scheme for helping differently-abled students to continue their higher education. SLIET is functioning with the main objective of offering layered, modular, flexible, multipoint entry/exit programmes in engineering and technology and there are also several other objectives with which the university is functioning.
