Sri Sathya Sai University is also called as Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning and the university was established by the Sri Sathya Sai Baba, who was acting as the chancellor of the university. The university offers education through three of its campuses located in the state of Andhra Pradesh each at Anantapur, Brindavan and Prashanti Nilayam Ashram.

Of these two of the campuses at Prashanthi Nilayam, Puttaparthi and Brindavan are meant for offering education to men students, while the Ananthapur campus is for women candidates. Prashanthi Nilayam campus has 11 departments for offering education under different subjects, Anantapur Campus has 15 departments and Brindavan campus has five departments.

The institute came into existence in the year 1981 as Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning and it was recognized as an autonomous body by the Ministry of Education of the Indian Government and the University Grants Commission as a Deemed University through its notification dated 10th of November 1981. The university is acting as the regular member of the Association of Indian Universities. The university aims at offering integral education and development of character is the primary objective of the institution.
