The university holds the pride of being the only Medical University in the state of Tamil Nadu with the capability of permitting affiliation to new paramedical, medical colleges coming under both private and the government control and awarding medical degrees. Before the establishment of this university, the medical degrees in the state of Tamil Nadu were awarded by the University of Madras.
