Kurukshetra University is affiliated to University Grants Commission. The university came into existence in the year 1956 as an education and research institute. The university is a member of Association of Commonwealth Universities. The main aim behind the establishment of the university was to promote Indian culture and traditions. The first department started in the university was Department of Sanskrit. The inauguration of the university was performed by India’s first president, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.
