Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University came into existence in the year 1987 and the university began its functions from the month of July the following year (i.e.) from the year 1988.

Before the establishment of this university, the medical degrees in the state of Tamil Nadu were awarded by the University of Madras.
