hi i am computer engg final yr student . i want to appear for upsc 2011. I heard that science subjects are difficult to score than arts sub . so if anyone knows which are the best 2 most scoring & interesting arts subjects.

i am opting urdu literature as one optional in mains but i am undecided about the second optional- whether to go for zoology or some Arts subject? Should I opt for an optional subject from arts stream? And if so which one?

hi friend, there is no best optional in civil services subjects,according to your interest , you should choose your optionals.my advuce is to take your graduation subject as your first optional,if you dont have interest,you choose any other subject from the list.

Am taking zoology as my first optional for mains and i am thinking of choosing geography as my second optional. will i be able to cope with geography as i have'nt studied this after my matriculation though i have interest and did well in this subject till my 10th standard or should i go for botany which i did till my graduation?????

are the optional subject you can take other than the compulsory subjects.

I would like to advice you to take Sociology as your optional subject because it's very easy to score marks in this subject.

there is no best optionals in the list. choosing the optional subjects depends on your interest in the subject. you can choose general subjects like public administration,political science,sociology,history,psycology,if you have interest in the literary subjects you can choose those subjects also.

From the commencing academic year, the preliminary examination is going to be replaced by CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) which does not require to choose the optional subject.

For IAS, one should have to go through the civil services examination conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission ) every year.

The selection procedure will be by
1)CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test)
2)Civil services main exam
3)Interview.

In order to get through CSAT in better manner, you focus on general studies and aptitude.

I would suggest you to focus on following aspects
-Comprehension
-Interpersonal skills
-Logical reasoning and analytical ability
-Decision making and problem solving
-General mental ability
-Basic numeracy
-Data interpretation

Hi,
Your previous degree doesn't resemble any optional subjects in civil services.
So, you are free to choose any subject on your choice. However, as you are medical student I think you would be good in bio. So you can opt for biology and anthropology. Also, you can opt arts subjects. The privillege with arts subject is that, it will help you very much in the preparation of general studies.
Finally, I would suggest you to choose a subject only on your choice which you like most because UPSC needs perfection and hard labor to the extent, you can go to.

Optionals should be selected on one's personal interests..

as of my case i personally like

psychology

geography..

some others may like history..

so i can't insist or suggest you the optionals you should decide according to your interest and analysis on those subjects

don't just choose subjects for only gaining high marks in the exam

because to gain those marks you have to concentrate a lot, if you have interest on the subject which you have selected ,then only it is easy to concentrate for more time in your preparation.

it is the fact of any ones preparation..

so select your best

i am a computer engineer and in first year of mba in marketing and finance
i want to appear next year but in a dilemma over optional subjects i want the easiest n d best combination
history is vast n tedious plus boring so it is ruled out
geography is scoring and i have an inclination to it but it is also as vast
public administration has a shorter syllabus so i am confused whether i should go for pub ad or geoor pol sci for prelims
also 2 subjects to be chosen for mains, am sure about pub ad

Hi dear,

First of all you have'nt mentioned weather you want it for "Preliminary" or for "Main"

However, you should opt for the subject in which you are good, or the subject which you think you can deliver your best.

It is not necessary that Polical science or Botany or any subjects will be easier, only the subject in which you are good or think you can handle it only that will be easier for you.

Well, since you a Dentist, you can opt "Medical Science" as your Optional.

Or followings will aslo be better:-

sir , best subject can be different for the different peoples .
see if i am interested in the political science then i will choose the political science
as my optional subject in the civil service exam.
or if you are interested in the botany then then it is better to you to choose the
botany as your optional subject.

it means that , the best subject is that in which you are perfect , perfect in the sense you know all the concepts about the particular subject which you have chosen.

i'm an engineering student and currently pursuing it though i want to start my preparartion for the civil services on a serious note. there is doubt as to what subjects should i take. should it be from electronics itself or the other way around. i wonder if i can score well in engineering subjects so arts is also a good option for me as i can push that sphere well. also, guide me with regard to the subjects related to arts. looking forward for your guidance.

I am an Architect by Profession and working presently.I am quitting my job next month and would start coaching from Oct 2011 batch.I have chosen Geography as one of my optional but I am confused about the other one.I like maths and physics but have heard they are too lengthy.Please suggest.
Also,kindly recommend some coaching institutes in Delhi with hostel facility(or rooms on rent nearby) keeping in mind the batches strength,faculties,study environment,etc.

Hi dear,

As you are already in an earning position then I don't think you would have any problem quiting your job. If you quit in JUL 2011 then you would be able to appear UPSC 2012.
You can start preparing from General Studies.
As you an engineer with experience then Mechanical itself would be the right choice as your optional subject.
The second subject you can choose as per your interest.
Public Admin generally goes well with tough subjects and so is the Mech.
Currently, you should focus on GS only. After 3-4 months you can start for optional subjects.
For GS, start reading The Hindu daily. Apart from that some magazines like CHRONICLE, PRATIYOGITA DARPAN, CSR etc should be read.

If possible, then purchase GS study material of Vajiram & Ravi(Best institute for GS).
