Is the Bengali language compulsory for WBCS exam?

For WBCS, the Bengali language*is not mandatory. There are two language papers that are required. The first paper is in English, while the second one is completely up to you. You do not need to select the Bengali language if you do not have enough knowledge of this language.

As far as the compulsion of Bengali language in academics is concerned then the answer to your query is that no Bengali is not required in academic degree for appearing in the WBCS (West Bengal Civil Services) examination.

But, as after qualifying WBCS you will be posted in Bengal where the primary language is Bengali, you will be required to qualify a departmental Bengali language examination within a stipulated time after your selection so that you are able to read, write and speak Bengali in proper way so that language does not become a hindrance in your official works.
