Can I take Sanskrit as optional subject in UPSC exam if I'm doing BAMS?

Sir, I'm doing second year BAMS. I would like to prepare for UPSC exam and I would like to choose Sanskrit as optional subject. But, I've heard that the language you have learned at graduation level shouldn't be taken as optional in UPSC exam. Is it true? We are studying Sanskrit in first year. I'm expert in Sanskrit. Help me please.

No, there is no limitation on the choice of optional paper for the UPSC examination.

So, you are eligible to appear for the Mains examination after qualifying in the Preliminary stages and write Sanskrit as optional paper.

Yes, you can definitely opt for Sanskrit as your optional paper in the Civil Services examination as it is not mandatory to have pursued the optional subject in your academics previously.

Now, as far as you are concerned about the rule that one cannot opt for language subjects opted by them in their graduation as their optional paper when appearing for the Civil Services examination then it is wrong rather it is matter of advantage for you.

For more details and FAQs related to the Civil Services examination eligibility criteria, you can refer to the link www.upsc.gov.in.

The eligibility criteria for Civil Services examination:

1. You must have a bachelor's degree in any stream from a recognized university. Final year graduation candidates can apply for exam.

2. Minimum age required is 21 years.

The first paper is Preliminary exam for selection of candidates for Mains exam.

In Mains exam, you have to select optional paper which is of 500 marks, two papers of 250 marks each. A candidate is free to select any subject of his/her choice. You can take Sanskrit as an optional subject after pursuing BAMS course.
