Hi,
One thing you must is that there is no subject related to your stream in IAS Exam. So you should go with subjects like physics, chemistry and mathematics if you are sound in these or else you can go with history, geography or economics if you want to start for start.

as you are studying 2nd year of engineering now if you want to study something for UPSC then you have to study it other than your syllabus.

for UPSC you should follow the everyday newspaper. you should improve your general knowledge, english and aptitude.

then if you want to study some subject then you should study some arts subject like history, geography, political science, economics etc.

choose which subject you want to study at the time of engineering.

best wishes.

This time UPSC pattern is changed and it is called as CSAT which is expected to come into effect from Civil Services Examination, 2011.

It consists of all objective type questions and no optional subjective type paper as it had earlier and you asked for in this thread..
so donot worry about optional subject..

Paper will be same for all kind of candidates wether B.A or B.Tech...

The syllabus for CSAT is:----

(Paper 1) (200 marks) consists of
Current events.
History
Geography
Indian Polity and governance
Economic and social development
and General science.

(Paper II) (200 marks)
Comprehension
Logical reasoning and analytical ability
Decision making and problem solving
General mental ability
Basic numeracy(Class X level)
English language comprehension skills (Class X level)

Political science, indian history, civilisation, administration and policy management are some of the common subjects chosen by a candidate appearing for IAS exam in addition to one of the core subject areas. These areas are better since we can prepare easily and we have lots of resources available to prepare on these areas. It is easy to cover these subjects compared to some other areas like physics, economics and so on.
