to prepare for gate follow the text books and be strong in the basics,
also read the gk publishers book,its really helpful,and also if possible please take coaching classes in institutes like demy in hyderabad or brilliant tutorials

You can prepare for GATE by yourself or joining some coaching classes.. Solve previous years question papers. For electrical you can focus on power system /control system/microprocessor etc.Make a list of important things and formulae for ready reference.
