for becoming IPS you will have to appear in UPSC civil services examination and will have to clear. to write this exam u should be a graduate and your age must be between 21-30 years(for general candidates).
important dates are
application form will be available from 1-2-2011 and the prelims will be held on 12-06-2011.

You can become IPS by giving IAS exam. In it opt. for IPS in options. Its notification will come in February & minimum qualification is Graduation.

Bachelor’s degree of a recognised university with at least one of the subjects namely Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physcs, Statistics and Zoology or a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Forestry or in Enginerring or an equivalent qualification.

To serve as an IPS or the Indian Police Service, one must pass the Civil Service Examination conducted by the UPSC every year.

The exam consists of 3 stages:

Stage One:

Stage one is Preliminary exam.It consists of objective type questions . This is a qualifying examination and only those who clear the prelims can appear for the Main examination.

Stage Two:

Stage two is called the Main examination.In the Main examination each candidate has to select two optional subjects, apart from which all candidates have to take a General Studies, Essay and compulsory language exam. A shortlist is prepared on the basis of the Main examination and these candidates can compete in the third and final stage.

Stage Three:

Stage three of exam called the Viva voice or the Interview. The marks of the Main examination and the Interview are combined to prepare a final merit list of selected candidates.

Minimum Eligibility Criteria:

*Age:

Minimum 21 years of age as on 1st August of the year of exam.
Upper Age limit is 30 years.(Relaxable upto 3 years for OBC and 5 years for SC/ST).

*Educational Qualification:

A Graduate degree in any field from a recognized university.

*Maximum Attempts:

General:4
OBC:7
SC/ST:No limit

No there is no minimum percentage requirement for IPS exam.

Any one who has completed there degree in any stream is eligible to appear for IPS exam.

Final year students can also apply.

Application forms are available only upto 21st March 2011.

Application forms are available both online & offline.

Candidates may apply Online by using the website http://www.upsconline.nic.in Detailed instructions for filling up online applications are available on the above mentioned website.

You can also get forms offline in any of the HPO's near your residence.

Exam will be on 12th June 2011.

Relaxation in age:-

SC/ST--- 5 years.
OBC--- 3 years.
Handicaped-- 10 years.

Number of attempts:-

General candidates: four attempts.
Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates: No restriction.
Other Backward Classes: seven attempts.

Eligibility for IPS exam

You must be 21 years (minimum) and 30 years (maximum) at the time of taking exam. SC/ST/OBC and ex-servicemen are given exemption of 3 to 5 years in maximum age limit.
People belonging to general category can appear for IPS exam four times, while OBCs can appear for seven times but no limit has been set for SC/ST. keep in mind, even appearing in just exam is counted as an attempt.
You also need to meet physical standards mentioned in application form

IPS Exam Eligibility

IPS stands for Indian Police Service and for joining in this great organization, the candidates have to succeed in the civil service examination conducted by the union public service commission. The eligibility criteria for IPS civil service examination are given below:

Age requirement:

During the year of applying for the examination the candidate must have attained 21 years of age on 1st of August. So, minimum age limit is 21 years and the maximum age limit is 30 in the case of candidates coming under general category and 33 for OBC candidates and 35 for candidates coming under SC/ST category. In the case of ex-servicemen an age relaxation of 5 more years is given.

Educational qualification:

The candidate must be a degree holder of any discipline from a recognized university. The candidates who are in the final year of their degree course can also apply for the examination. Candidate who have completed their M.B.B.S., but not have completed the required internship during the time of submission of the application to the main examination will be provisionally admitted for the main examination.

Physical qualification for IPS:

Height: The male candidate should be 165cm and female candidate should be 150cm for general category candidates. In the case of candidates coming under SC/ST/OBC the height required is 160cm for male and 145cm for female.

Chest: Minimum requirement in the case of male candidates is 84cm and they should be able to expand the chest for 5cm. In the case of female candidates the minimum requirement is 79cm and they should be able to expand the chest for 5cm.

Eye sight: 6/12 or 6/9 distant vision for worse eye and 6/6 or 6/9 distant vision for good eye. Near vision for worse eye is J2 and for good eye is J1.

The physical standards are essential for IPS, which includes weekly run for 10kms in 60 minutes, rope climbing, horse riding, PT obstacles, etc.

Many people fail in this test of chest expansion.

(I know some people who have cleared this exam during the second Medical Test, i.e. after the Medical Exam conducted after the declaration of Final result)



Eye sight

The correction is by lenses only.

High standard for the Colour-blind test.

No inherent night blindness.

Ladies should not be pregnant at the time of Medical Test.
