what is M.Tech actually?to secure admission in IIT's for this course what rank I should get in the GATE examination?

see as you might be knowing b.tech means bachelor of technology whereas m.tech is masters.so, by this it self you can get an idea on what m.tech is.
The GATE cutoff scores for IITs are as follows.

GATE Rank will get you through IIT's There are some institutes which conduct their own exams as well like many IIIT's IIIT Bangalore, iiit Hyderbad, Isquareit Pune, and many others.

FOr iit you need to crack gate

For getting into IIT's through GATE, one should required to score at least 600+ marks and 96% percentile in GATE for general candidate, for M.Tech.

While having 550 or above score along with 95% GATE Percentile can let you in the list of selection through Interview. Some student says that getting through the Interview is even tougher then getting through GATE scores and percentile, because Technical Questions are asked in Interview which are far typical to handle then attempting the paper.

However it also depends upon the Course you are selecting for, but the requirement will be the same.

Whwere as for getting into MS degree one can do so by scoring 500+ in GATE.

However, there is huge relaxation for students from backward categories SC/ST/PH and OBC candidates.

GATE is a entrance test for allow you to do Mtech after your btech or master.

final year or prefinal year students are also eligiable to attain in GATE exam.

for getting chance in IIT minimum 97% is required in gate exam.that is you have to get rank with in 600.

but for the iit you must have score at least 98+ percentile in gate exams,

Generally the GATE cutoff in IITs is AIR 400-500
It varies from one IITs to different and also depends on the branch you opt for. But if you score 400+ then there are chances of call for interview.
However you can get civil engineering at around GATE rank 300. But for MECH,ECE,Electrical etc you will have to score 400+ rank.

since this year everything for ate has changed...this year cut off will be on percentile basis...

For getting admission in the IITs you need to score 650 i.e 99%. for getting into five star colleges across india you need minimum 600+ in GATE.

for getting IIT u have to rank above 95% other wise not.GATE means graduate apptide test in engg, means for doing master degree this exam is taken.in IIT the no of sit for M.Tech is very less.so u have to give the exam very well.the IIT that offers for master degree r

Students who have passed BTech. in any stream like mechanical, aeronautical, electrical , IT etc. & wish to pursue higher education(i.e. master's degree) enroll themselves in MTech programme conducted by various institutes.

GATE is the entrance exam for selection into MTech. course offered by India's premiere engineering institute, IITs & a couple of other institutes.

General category students need to score minimum 600 marks in GATE in order to qualify for the mtech. course at IITs

I am not getting your question, is it implies that you dont know about MTech course??
Its ok, Mtech course is offered just after BTech. Mtech is none but the specialization in core subjects. For example Mtech in automobile engineering is a well confined area of mechanical engineering. Any btech in mech. engineer is eligible for this course but he will study elaborately about automobiles only. For a ECE Btech it could be MTech in nanotechnology or signal processing or embedded technology.
As you have seen from the previous posts that GATE requires almost GATE score of 600 for a genearal category candidate. Rank required would be almost under 1000.

m.tech means MASTER OF TECHNOLOGY, after passing this you can be a faculty of any institute or you may get a good job.

if your rank within 100-200 is the best to get M.Tech Admission in IIT.

So, we can figure out right Time of Preparing for GATE is right after you get into 3rd year, because it will lay a strong foundation towards the entrance. But if you wont able to handle both your B.Tech and GATE preparetion simultaneously then just be focused on your B.Tech perform well in it and then take time for GATE preparetion and then appear.

And never appear for it without any preparetion.

IT has been noticed that 3rd year studet get appeared for GATE with a general intention that "Ek Try lekar Dhekte Hai". So never do that.

Remember Try can't help you to get succeed unless you are giving you best to that.
