A recognized university is the one which offers courses as per the norms of the council constituted by government of India for good quality education.
The councils or the commissions recognizes universities on the basis of the quality of education, Infrastructure, etc. and once the university is recognized, it needs to follow all the norms and regulations of the council providing the recognition.
Universities basically needs to be recognized by University Grant Commission to be acceptable at central level or must be recognized by the State Government to be acceptable on state level.
The professional courses like Law, Engineering, Medicine etc needs recognition of professional council and are as follows:

All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE)
Medical Council of India (MCI)
Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR)
National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE)
Dental Council of India (DCI)
Pharmacy Council of India (PCI)
Indian Nursing Council (INC)
Bar Council of India (BCI)
Central Council of Homeopathy (CCH)
Central Council for Indian Medicine (CCIM)
Council of Architecture
Distance Education Council
Rehabilitation Council
National Council for Rural Institutes

Professional courses not recognized by the relevant professional councils will not be considered eligible to get proper licence to practice the profession or won't be acceptable for jobs or any kind of entrance examination at central level.

it is a univ. which is offers courses as the norms of the govt. of india.this govt. provides courses like,engineering, law medicine.the council of the commission recognised university on the basis of the quality of education.

Hello dear,

Recognized University is nothing but universities which are approved by governing bodies like UGC,AMIE, Institute of engineers etc.If your university or any deemed universities or college are approved by UGC, then it is called recognised.

Benefits of having studied in recognised college:-

1. You can write for many competitive exams like GATE,CAT,IAS etc.

2. If you are going for any government service jobs, then it is really necessary to have a degree from a recognised university.

3. Also in many foreign nationals, they are taking students from good colleges approved by AICTE or UGC.

4. Dont go for colleges which are not approved by these governing bodies.

By the term Recognise we mean to say that the courses offered by the institution is as per the norms of the government.
A University should should be deemed by UGC or AICTE or MHRD.
If not the certificates issued by it are illegal.
Getting recognised by the University Grants Commission is the prerequisite for every university .usually it has been seen that PSCs do not consider degrees from such Universities


So If YOu Are opting for a course, always check its recognition with UGC or AICTCE.

I am currently Pursuing MTech From BITS Pilani in Distance Learning mode.
I found that the BITS Pilani was recognized for Distance Learning of Technical Education only till 2008. However it is no more recognized, what does this mean ? Will my course i'm pursuing currently be academically of any value ?

Dear sir, I have taken admission in two years MBA (MKT) in Jan 2015 from SAM HIGGINBOTTOM UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE, TECHNOLOGY & SCIENCES - SHUATS in distance mode.university had recognised for sessions 2014-15 & 2015-16 .Due to some technical problems of university 4th sem(last sem) examination is conducted in Feb 2017 instead of Dec 2016 Most probably result will be published in May-June 2017.Right now university is failure to get further recognition for 2016-17.I want to know the validity of degree which is obtained by me.May I appear for any exam in future on the basis of this MBA degree.kindly suggest.
